A. Students who are also employees at the University will now have two separate accounts (i.e. one student account and one employee account). Q. In Mirapoint, I added several addresses and domains to my spam “whitelist” so that I could be guaranteed receipt of e-mails from specific people/domains. Will this information be carried over to my PantherMail account?
A. No. “Whitelist” and “Blacklists” will not be carried over to your PantherMail account; however, PantherMail automatically ‘whitelists” all individuals who are in your contact list to ensure receipt of e-mails from these specific individuals. Also, you can easily view your spam messages by clicking on the Spam folder. If a message that should not have been marked as spam gets quarantined, you can easily mark it as “not spam” and it will never go into your Spam folder again. Likewise, you can mark messages “as spam” if they arrive in your Inbox and should have gone to your Spam folder.
Q. In Mirapoint, I had a forward that was sending all of my FIU e-mail to another external account. Will that forward be migrated to my new PantherMail account?
A. No. Any forwarding addresses you had in Webmail Mirapoint will not be migrated to your new PantherMail account. You will need to recreate these forwarding addresses in PantherMail again by going into Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
Q. How do I set up my PantherMail account for IMAP access?
A.

All FIU students with PantherMail accounts have IMAP access capabilities automatically; however, IMAP does have to be enabled and configured first. Here’s how:

Log in to your FIU PantherMail account

Click on Settings

Click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP

Scroll down to the IMAP access section

Select the Enable IMAP button

Click Save Changes so your changes are saved.

Click the Configuration instructions link to get detailed information on how to configure your specific IMAP client (e.g., Outlook Express, Outlook 2003/2007, etc.)

You will need to set your IMAP server within your IMAP client to imap.gmail.com and your SMTP server to smtp.gmail.com

You will also need to set up your IMAP client to use a secure connection (SSL) which will use port 993 instead of the default 143 port for IMAP.

When prompted for your Gmail username in the Account name/Login field, make sure you enter your FIU e-mail address (e.g., jdoe001@fiu.edu).

Q. How do I set up my PantherMail account for POP access?
A.

All FIU students with PantherMail accounts have POP access capabilities automatically, but it does have to be enabled and configured first. Here’s how:

Log in to your FIU PantherMail account

Click on Settings

Click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP

Scroll down to the POP download section

For Item # 1, choose either the Enable POP for all mail so it downloads ALL your current mail in your PantherMail INBOX or choose Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on so it downloads only the mail that arrives from now on.

For Item #2, select whether you want to keep a copy of the messages in the PantherMail Inbox after they are downloaded or if they should be deleted or archived. (If archived, Gmail will assign a label to them and these messages will be accessible to you via your “All Mail” view).

Click Save Changes so your changes are saved.

Click the Configuration instructions link under Item # 3 to get detailed information on how to configure your specific POP client (e.g., Outlook Express, Outlook 2002/2003, Eudora etc.)

You will need to set your POP server within your POP client to pop.gmail.com and your SMTP server to smtp.gmail.com

When prompted for your Gmail username/Login Name in the Account name field, enter your fully qualified FIU e-mail address (e.g., jdoe001@fiu.edu)

About the E-mail System

Q. What options do I have for accessing email?
A.

The primary option is through your computer’s web browser. It's packed with exciting features and integrated with other Google services. In your online email account, you can chat with your contacts, create filters to organize your inbox before new mail arrives, schedule calendar events, map addresses in your messages, and track postal packages.

Alternative access options include:

POP - For configuration instructions, please read the question above titled "How do I set up my Gmail account for POP access"

IMAP - For configuration instructions, please read the questions above titled "How do I set up my Gmail account for IMAP access"

Mobile - Connect to the web as you normally would with your phone's web browser, and select OK. If you have a BlackBerry, you can download the mail application. Navigate to http://m.google.com/a. It has most of the webmail features - search and conversation view. With automatic syncing, actions taken on your Blackberry are reflected in your email account. This is separate from the PantherMail for mobile application. A red "M" icon will appear for PantherMail and a blue "M" icon will appear for our Google Apps email.

Q. How are the Google services linked together?
A. You have one username for all services in the Google Apps package. Once you log in to one service, you can easily access all others. Rely on the Start Page to provide access to the rest of the services. The Start Page is publicly available, but won't display personalized content until you log in. You can see a recent snapshot of new mail, calendar events, and updated documents. Within your email account, you can chat with your contacts. You'll receive invitations for calendar events and to collaborate on documents and spreadsheets.
Q. Are my FIU aliases going to remain the same?
A. Yes, your primary e-mail address will remain the same, and any aliases you have created will remain the same so people can continue to e-mail you at the addresses they know of.
Q. What do I need to know about documents and spreadsheets?
A.

It's a web-based word processing and spreadsheet application. Your documents are stored online. You and anyone you invite to collaborate can access the document from any internet-connected computer, and make changes simultaneously. Multiple people can make changes at once, and everyone's changes show in real-time. You can get started right away by creating a new document or by uploading a file from your computer. Since the products are integrated, you can use your email account Contacts list to invite people to view or edit your documents.

More Tips on Google Docs:

Revision history -- Individual edits are kept so you can see who made changes and revert back, if necessary.
Search -- Just like the rest of Google products, you can harness the power of Google search to look for a document you haven't edited in months.
Security and privacy -- You choose who sees your document. Other users can only access your document or spreadsheet if you add them to the list of collaborators or viewers, or if you decide to publish the document.

Q. I can chat in my email account. Why bother with the Google Talk client?
A. Free voice calls, voicemail for when your contacts are offline, and file transfers while chatting. PC-to-PC voice calls (VoIP) are practical and offer great quality. The person on the other end can be anywhere in the world as long as he or she is connected to the Google Talk network.
Q. Where can I find more information?
A. Help Center: www.google.com/support/a/users
Q. If I accidentally delete a message from my Trash or Spam folders, can I get it back?
A. No, once you delete from theTrash or Spam folder, you are permanently deleting the message and it cannot be recovered. Please note that the Delete button within the Trash and Spam folder reads "Delete Forever" to remind you that the message will be completely removed from the system and cannot be recovered, not by UTS nor by Google Mail.
Q. Since I can access my new PantherMail account at http://panthermail.fiu.edu, does this mean my friends can e-mail me at myusername@panthermail.fiu.edu?
A. No, http://panthermail.fiu.edu is the URL for accessing the PantherMail system, but it is not a valid mail domain. If you wish to receive e-mails in your PantherMail account, you must be e-mailed at myusername@fiu.edu.
